my blog is now complete sorry for it being late

Dr. Cable reflection

I choose this character Dr. Cable to do my 4th review because I think that she is the most important of the remaining characters. About half of this book is caused by the quest that Dr. Cable has put into the hands of Tally. Without Dr. Cable this would be a very boring book.

The time in which I am writing about is when Dr. Cable has sent Tally of onto her mission. But it is just before Tally has thrown the pendant/ necklace into the flames. When Tally has been away for a long time Dr. Cable would be starting to wonder where Tally is. It shouldn't take this long to get to the smoke.

Dr. Cable journal

Tally Youngblood, where are you. I think about what could be happening with her almost everyday. Waiting to get a signal from that little girl. I am starting to wonder if it is possible that she has become stranded even when there is something around her neck that will signal me when she gets hurt. Maybe she is dead. And I wouldn't know how to find her. She could be anywhere, because only she can understand how to read those instructions on how to get to the smoke. There must be a way. Tally, a single person has the power to destroy the smoke. She came to me to get the operation. She wanted the operation, she wanted to be pretty. I am giving her this opportunity to do the thing that she so desperately wants to do and she is failing me. It is not that much of a problem to me if she doesn't return. I do not need her but I think that there is also a chance that she has gotten to the smoke and while she is there she has been converted to the side of the smoke. It is not very often that I can find a person who has a friends who has left to go to the smoke and left directions for their friend about how to get there. Have I done anything wrong, have I  treated little Tally Youngblood wrong in any way? But what I did was what I am trained to do. I am not supposed to be nice to the patience's that I have to deal with. But what am I to do with the people that I do capture. There is not a doubt in my mind that they will want to stay as an ugly. Will I have to bribe them. I wish that I won't be forced to harm them. But judging by the extents that the smoke is going threw to stay a secret, they work so hard. It is such a shame that they are could be ruined by a "friend." They might trust, and they will despise her if they know that it was her that destroyed the smoke. But it is likely that all of that will change after the operation is over. By then they will all be happy and I will have nothing to worry about. The main problem that I have to deal with will be over after all of this time. And at this time I will have all of the humans over the age of 15 pretty. All of their brains will have the lesion that so few people know about. And I think that if I do find the smoke that I will be forced to get rid of their founders Maddy and Az peoples names that I will never forget, as they know about the lesions. All of these things are dependent on the actions of a single ugly by the name of Tally Youngblood.

david reflection

I choose David because I think that in the second half of the book he is the most important character when excluding Tally. I think that he is a good example of a well opinionated character. He is also the main character of the smoke. Even though there is no real leader of the smoke David is the character who is best represented in this book.

David is also very well represented at this time in the book. The part which I am talking about is shortly after Tally has moved to into the settlement of the smoke. He is slightly suspicious of the time that Tally has come at. Because she has come so many days after her birthday. However he has become accustomed to her presence. Tally, Shay and David have become the main characters in the middle of the book and it the end it is just Tally and David because Shay along with the rest of the smoke have been taken away to the special circumstances. Making David  more of a main character.

David's journal

I wonder what kind of life it was that Tally left so that she could come to the smoke. She is such a nice person. But it doesn't take a genius to realize that Tally is not used to the work that must be performed here in the smoke. Judging by the things that I hear about the city from my friends it is like a very strange place. It seems as though no work is required by the citizens to keep the civilization going. Its seems like a great place. If I didn't know about the horrible thing that my parents learned about the surgery then I might consider going to see the city from the inside. Maybe if I asked my parents they could perform the surgery so that there wouldn't be anything done to my brain. It could be like a vacation. No work that had to be done. I could do anything. And if I got into trouble I could just travel back to the smoke and not have to worry about the special circumstances. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to live with and in the time of the rusties. Because the place that I am living in right now is almost like the rusties. See the advances in the technology, it could be like a break from all of the work that I am doing right now. But maybe the work that I'm doing right now is nothing in comparison to what the rusties had to do for work. But since I cannot go back in time and see what the rusties did I should focus on the things that I have to do now. Both Tally and Shay seem to be nice girls and they both seem to like me. I wish that this wasn't true. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But if I did have to choose i think that I would choose Tally because she has a nicer personality than Shay. The Shay that I used to know from when I saw her in the rusty ruins has changed. It is almost like she is not satisfied with what the smoke really is. And sometimes I think that she is a bit jealous of Tally. Maybe Shay can tell that I am showing more affection towards Tally. But in the end if she is jealous then why not go all the way. If Shay is already jealous then I may as well love Tally. I wish that people were not brought here without my permission. Tally was not invited here by me or my parents. We are the founders of this settlement. We should be in control of who can come here. If more people start to come here then it will be harder to control the people that come here. But without the Smoke having a leader then things such as this will always happen.

Shay refelection

I choose this character because she is one of the two people who will have the greatest opinion on the actions of Tally. Shay is was of Tally's friends but she has some mixed opinions of her actions. From the viewpoint of Tally they seem to become less friendly towards each other after they have both gotten to the smoke. For Shay it is not only towards Tally but she always seem to be more grumpy.

The point in the book that I am trying to represent is just after Tally has arrived at the smoke. I choose this point in the book for Shay because I thought that this was the most important part of her life that is represented in the first book of the series.  At this point in time she seems to be slightly agitated with the attention that tally is getting, especially the attention that she is getting from David.

newspaper article 2, not written by me

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/245965.php

A little girl of 6 asks her father, "Daddy, do I look fat?" A 15-year-old boy risks damaging his liver and kidneys by regularly taking steroids to boost his abs and pecs. A 12-year-old girl dreads going to school every day and determines never to put her hand up in class for fear of drawing attention to her looks.

Unfortunately these not uncommon examples are just some of the symptoms "that show body image pressure in our society has got out of hand," says Jo Swanson MP, and Chair of an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) that on Wednesday released a report proposing wide-ranging recommendations for government, industry, voluntary groups and individuals.Dissatisfaction with body image in the UK has never been higher, particularly among young people, says the 80-page report. The document, titled "Reflections on Body Image", covers growing up (the focus of this article), and two other areas, "mis-sold ideal", and health.
It follows a lengthy inquiry that investigated the causes and consequences of body image anxiety in the UK. The APPG, established in May 2011, heard evidence from hundreds of people, including academics, health professionals, teachers, and members of the public.
Body image dissatisfaction undermines self-confidence, contributes to depression, and results in a number of physical, emotional and societal problems. Promoting positive body image is fundamental to addressing some of the social and public health problems facing young people, says the report. The inquiry heard evidence that around half of girls and up to a third of boys have dieted to lose weight. It heard that children and young people dissatisfied with their bodies are less likely to take part in learning at school, and over half of bullying is targeted at appearance.

I choose this article because I think that it is very closely related to how the people think in the book. They seem to be so concerned about the way that they look, of course the people think this in the book but they may not go on a diet because they are getting the surgery when they are 16 either way. But it is the fact the people in the book think they are ugly and that they are not as good as the pretties just because of the way they look. I think that it is related to the dystopian that is written in the novel.

The author is panning what is happening with the self-esteem because it truly is harming the children. It can cause depression, there is no positive emotion shown in his/her article. The author pans this by showing all of the negative effects of the media on children. I think that this author dose this because he would like to raise awareness for the things that are being done wrong by the media, and I think that they need to be fixed. This is affects my view of the novel because there were some things that I learned about that were truly amazing, in a bad way. It is horrible what some kids are afraid of because they are being judged. It almost makes me feel sorry because people go through years of their life thinking that they are ugly. Or the people in the book as they will all live 16.

map reflection

I choose to show this map because I think that it helps the reader understand where the characters are moving at the time. I think that this would be helpful because Tally does a lot of moving around into different places and cities. In the beginning of the book Tally is already on the move as she is trying to find her friend Peris who has just moved to New Pretty Town because he has turned 16 and become pretty. Then after this she meets Shay who teaches her how to hoverboard and brings her to the rusty ruins. As her friendship with Shay grows they move to the next place and go to the smoke, however Tally does do this Alone, and this is only because she is forced to by the special circumstances, another place on this map.

There are 5 different places that are shown on this map and they include Uglyville, New Pretty Town, The Rusty Ruins, The Smoke and special circumstances. There is also a forest but this places is not very important as the only thing that really happens there is Tally and "the Boss" trying to escape the specials. Each of the places that are shown in the map are of great importance to the story. Uglyville is the starting place for the story, the place were Shay and Tally developed a friendship. New Pretty Town is the home of Tally's old friend Peris and also the place that the book is based around. The smoke is the reason for the adventure of Tally, without it she simply would have moved to New Pretty Town making for a boring story. The Rusty Ruins is the place where are small group of the smoke reside to after the Special Circumstances destroy the smoke. And finally the special circumstances is the place where Az, Maddy and also Dr. Cable the reason for this long adventure that has caused Tally so much trouble.

quotation 4

"I am Tally Youngblood, Make me pretty"

I choose this quote because I thought that is was the most important one in the final quarter of the book. It is a sentence that completely changes the book. Even though this is the last thing that it says in the book it really leads the reader on to reading the next book in the series. It is one that will not be forgotten, because it was such a turn around in the way that the book was going. However I was not surprised by this as the name of the next book is pretties I thought that Tally would have to become pretty at some point.

Text to Text. I cannot think of an example in a book that I have read that is about someone wanting to become pretty. In the book Charlotte's web Wilber the pig is entered into a competition and to try to win they try to make him pretty, now this is not directly related to Tally asking to be pretty as for Tally it is a life changing event while for Wilber the pig it is just a contest which he ends up loosing. But the point is that this part of the book Charlotte's web is slightly related to the injustice in Uglies and that is that people will win something in the case of Charlotte's web or be looked up to in the case of Uglies. It is how people are judged on the beauty that has been placed upon them in unnatural ways (not born with it).

Text to World. I think that this is something that is indirectly said when people are getting something done in terms of beauty. They want to become pretty, they are likely to be thinking this in the back of their minds. It is something that people may think to themselves often. Sometimes people are discouraged because of other peoples remarks and this lowers their self esteem making them hurt internally, and making them think less of themselves. However this quote is not in representation of a bad thing as her final intention was to help the people of the smoke to find a cure for the brain lesions. So really this quote doesn't have much to do with being pretty it is just to help her friends. But it is the way that she says it that almost changes the meaning of why she is becoming pretty, she makes it sound like she has been waiting for a long time to get away from the smokies.

Text to Self. I cannot relate this topic to anything that I have ever done but it is something that I have been informed about all of my life. My mother has tried multiple diets, it is not that they do not work but she has a lot of trouble staying in them. Being a part of a Greek family we go and eat lots of food very often at parties and family gatherings. It is near impossible to find the will power to stay on a diet while the people around you are eating food that she would love to have but could not because of her diet. This led her into a different path and this path was excise. My mom enrolled in a learn to run program or a beginners program for running. She lost weight by doing this but it was no short of 3-5 hours a week of doing one of the most boring sports I know. My mom even brought me into this and we started to run together. We would go further and further distances and she would lose more weight. But this weight that she was losing was not the point of this, it was the reason that she was doing this, she was doing it to make herself feel better and show herself what she is capable of.. Joining this sport has been something that changed both of our lives, it has even led me to winning my first race (in my age category) and receiving a plaque. Exercise is something that has helped our family, it can be a team effort. I do not think that it is right that people go to a doctor and get this removed, if she would have done this then she would have never helped me and she would also waste money. I disagree with what Tally is saying in this quote and I do not think that people should be made pretty but it should be something that is worked for.

quotation 3

A strange thought crossed her mind, and Tally said, “I’d hate it if you got the operation.”
She couldn’t believe she was saying it. “Even if they didn’t do your brain, I mean.”

This is something that is spoken to David just after Tally has learned what really happens when an ugly gets the operation. I think that this is one of the first points in the book where Tally realizes that it is possible to be pretty even without getting the surgery. This is one of the most important parts of the book in my mind because it shows that the media or special circumstances in the case of the book is in control of beauty, and the people in this book are so obsessed with beauty that they will do anything for it. If I were only looking for social injustices them this would be the point it would be easiest to see.

Text to Text. An article that I read while I was in Mr. Rakuc's class was all about how people in the beauty business are always trying to make people feel bad about the way they look. In a commercial they will take an average person and indirectly say that she looks bad even if she is just normal. They are trying to say that the way that we look now is ugly and if we use their product then we will be beautiful. It is just like in the book but I think that the book makes it more obvious than it is in real life but it is not exaggerated very much in comparison to modern-day society.

Text to World. I think that this obsession with beauty or more importantly beauty products is unjust. Companies are using their commercials to make people think that they need beauty products to look good. This is not true, this is not the real person if they are wearing make up of have had plastic surgery (Of course there are some reasonable exceptions to have plastic surgery such as recovering from a major medical operation) because they think that they may not look like everybody else. This is just like what Tally is realizing at this point in the book. She is realizing that people do not need to get surgery to become beautiful.

Text to Self. There are people everywhere who get surgery. Almost all of these people would not get surgery if it were not for the media. They think that they need the surgery to be regular. It is unusual when one thinks of what these people are really doing, they are trying to trick people into thinking they look "regular." This is just like how the special circumstances into thinking that being a  "pretty" is regular.

quotation #2

“You can, Tally. You must. Think of it as an adventure.”

I choose this quote because I think that it is a good example of what is going to happen in the book. This is what Tally is going to be doing for the next part of the book. I think that this shows how bent the uglies are on becoming pretty. It shows that the government has completed their mission on making everybody wanting to become pretty so bad that they will do anything. She has convinced Tally to distroy the smoke just so that she can be pretty. They think of becoming pretty as something that they have to do. It seems almost that the uglies build their entire life around becoming pretty. No matter what they must do to achieve this goal.

Text to text. I relate this to the book Lord of the Rings Return of the King. In this book Frodo is the main character who has a ring that he is to destroy, because it is the cause for all evil in the world. But if he wears this ring he is granted powers and because of this he doesn't want to destroy the ring. This book trilogy is about Frodo's "adventure" to destroy the ring. This is like tally in the Uglies because she has the power to destroy the smoke but she doesn't want to because having it grants her with friends.
Text to World. This is a quote that represents something that people must do almost every day of their lives. There are a lot of challenges that people face and it lakes them just that much easier to think of them as an adventure or a game. It is what makes life enjoyable. Without thing of life as an adventure it can become very boring.
Text to self. Text to self is closely related to text to world. Whenever there is something that I have to do I will think of it as a game or an adventure. Anything from doing homework to mowing the law I will try to make a game out of it. A game makes chores more fun, and the more fun it is the faster the time goes by. Making me, mentally, spend less time on the boring things in life.

Glossary

Bubbly: Adj. This is a term used in the book that represents something that is cool. They like anything that is pretty, or anything that is fun or simply a good feeling. They like anything that is "bubbly."“There’s even a rumor that all the bubbly jobs go to people who had tricky records as kids. But that’s years from now. The main thing is to get you pretty already.”

Hoverboard: This is a board that uses the metal that is in the ground. In the cities there is metal grids all throughout the ground making possible to hoverboard anywhere. However when out in places such as the rusties there certain places that the hoverboard can hover on. In the Smoke they are trying to build their own grid from the

Pretty: The word pretty has a very different definition in the book. It is any person that has gone threw a surgery that can be performed when they turn 16. Without this surgery it is impossible to be pretty. And in the book being pretty means more than having good looks. It also has to do with what has been done to the  brain. “I don’t want to be pretty.” This is refering to the fact that someone is not born with beauty but it is given to them in the form of surgery.

Ugly: This is any normal person that is within the ages of 12 and 16. This persson in no way is ugly. They are only ugly in the eyes in their own society. It is the media that his decided what is ugly. Uglies are jsut regular people.

Special: A special is a person who is capable of extreme feats of strength. They aren't only capable of feats of strength but they are also extremely intelligent. They are like supermen.  They are like police except they do not need weapons, because all of their senses are hightened to an extreme degree "Apparently, Specials are like gremlins; you blame them when anything weird happens. Some people think they’re totally bogus, and no one I know has actually seen a Special.” This quote is saying that these "specials" are so powerful that they are rarely used in Uglyville.

Quotation #1

" What could they do to her, anyway? In three months she’d be a pretty herself."

I choose this quote from the beginning of the book because it think that it represents the mind set of Tally, during the start of the book Even though she has been told to by Peris to stay out of trouble for the next 3 months. It was something that she tried to do, but because of the things that Shay persuaded her to do her life for the next three months was not going the way that she wanted it to.

An example of text to Self would be a day where I was planing a game of hockey and one of my teams player was getting a penalty for body contact and he decided that because there was a small amount of time left in the game he thought "what could he possibly do that could get him in more trouble, why would the referee?" So what he did was started to yell at the referee. And it could get worse as he got kicked out of the game and was also suspended from the next game. In the end concluding that something still can go wrong it doesn't matter how much time is left.

Text to Text.  An example of this would be something that happens in a lot of different books. The main or secondary character will think. How could this get any worse or there is no time left to get in trouble, how could they punish us. And when they think this they go and try to get into trouble.

Text to World. A lot of the time in the regular world things like this will not happen. When something as important as turning pretty. They will not want to take any risks, but because they are so close to making it to what they have been waiting for, for so long they think that they can get away with things, they think that the consequences will go away since they are so close.

Shay's journal

Shay: I have so many mixed feeling about Tally coming to the smoke. I know that I am the person that told her to come here but nobody seems to be friends with her. They are so suspicious, I'd wish that they would accept that she is not a spy nor a traitor. She is my friend and it hurts to have her being excluded from this society. I wish that people would believe me when I say that she is innocent. She has done nothing wrong. She does seem a bit different, but that doesn't mean that I don't trust her. I will always trust her, even though I will always trust her it doesn't mean that I will always like her, it is like she has taken David away from me. It's not fair, David was my friend first, she can't take him away from me. And today she still hasn't come home yet. I think that she is with David. It seems like they are becoming more than more than just friends. I don't mean to be jealous but I feel as if David should be mine. I don't even know why he likes Tally. Tally isn't good at anything, she can barley survive in the smoke. She probably wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for me. I have done everything that I can to help her and in return this is what she gives me. I feel bad for myself. So much so, that I have thought about going back to Uglyville so that I can turn pretty. They I could be in a party everyday, always having fun, I could be carefree. Not ever having to worry about David and Shay. Maybe to get David to like me I could go to Uglyville so that I could become pretty after the operation. And once I'm done with the operation then I could come back to the smoke, then David might like me. I could be the only pretty person in all of the smoke.

I am thinking more about the thought that Tally may be a traitor! What if she is, the technology of the special circumstances is likely to be more advanced than the things that David uses to detect trackers when they first come to the smoke. Maybe the things that David was using was obsolete, maybe Tally does have trackers on her and we just don't know it, or maybe Tally has some tracker that not even she knows about. Maybe I should just go back to a regular place, like Newpretty town or Uglyville. Nothing is going the way that I planned. I though that it would just be me and David together all the time. Tally has been less of a friend. But there is nothing that I can do about it. Maybe after Tally has been here for a while people will get used to her, she will loose attention. Maybe then David will pay more attention to me. But until then I will just have to wait.

Tally Youngblood reflection

I choose Tally as one of my character because she is the main character. The book is written in the perspective of her life, and she is also a respectable character. Because Tally is the main character she is shown to be the most interesting. I think that Tally would be the easiest character to predict what they are thinking.

I choose Tally in this point of the book because it was a pivotal point in the book, it left me thinking what Tally was going to do. Even Tally herself was wondering what to do in this situation. I think that this point in the book that shows that Tally is a good person. She has the option to activate the pendant or not. The future of the smoke lays in her hands. And even though she ends up damaging the necklace by dropping it into a fire she still had the intent to keep the smoke hidden and safe. However this intent doesn't count for much when in the end, the smoke is destroyed and almost all of its occupants are captured.

Tally Youngblood; journal

Tally Youngblood:  I'm under so much pressure. I don't know what to do. This necklace has placed so much pressure upon me. I still wonder what it is going to be like when I become pretty. But every time that I think of showing my eye to the necklace, I think of all the friends that I will lose. David, Shay, Croy, all of them will be gone forever. I don't know if I can dedicate my entire life to being an ugly. If a use the necklace then I can see Peris again. I made a promise to Peris, and that was that I wouldn't do anything to prevent me from being pretty, nothing that would prevent me from never seeing him again. I miss him, but if I use the necklace I will miss David and Shay. Why has all of this pressure been placed on me. Why did the smoke have to exist. It has ruined my life, why did shay have to run away. Her life was fine just the way that it was, she could be pretty right now, and there would be no guilt for me. I wouldn't have to choose between breaking a promise with Peris or sending a group of my friends to jail. I miss the days when we would hoverboard for fun, now any time that I am on my hoverboard it is for work. It is an entirely new way of life. I didn't realize how easy life was until I traveled to the smoke. Even things such as keeping warm have become a real task. Trading things all of the time for items such clothing. I realize that life will get better as time goes by but I don't think that it will ever be as easy as it was in Uglyville, or as easy as it would have been in new pretty town. Right now I could be in a tower in a party with Peris. I could be having way more fun than here in the Smoke. But I will have to accept the fact that I must make the decision at one point of another. I regret what I did on my first day here. I should have used the necklace then, when it was easiest. Now I have friends here, I can't do it now. Maybe I should tell Shay, but how will she react, if I tell her, will she hate me forever or will she forgive me and understand the situation that I am in. The chance that she would understand what I am going through is very slim. Maybe she would help me, Maybe she would hate me. If I give the smoke away it may make my life a bit better but it will ruin the life of the residents of the smoke. I have to think about what the consequences are. If I use the necklace then all of these people will lose their entire life's work but if I don't I will be ugly possibly forever. This society is so complex, there is nothing that I can do that can get me pretty without ruining the smoke. I wish I had someone to ask someone who I could trust. Someone who would understand the special circumstance that I am in. I wish...

newspaper article 1, written by me

It is seen everywhere. It is beauty. We see it anywhere we look. It is in billboards, movies, television commercials. Some people follow what the media has to say all of the time. They follow all of the fashion magazines and websites. These people are a perfect example of people who cannot decide for themselves what beauty is. They have to look at other people to see what the media says is beautiful. But this is not much of a problem until people see that they are different than the people that they see in the media. It lowers thousands of peoples self esteem. Having a lower self esteem means that people may be afraid to face everyday challenges such as presenting a resume to get a job. They may think that they are incapable of seeing other people. It makes it so that all that they think about is what other people think of them. They start to only worry about the way that they look. Things such as their jobs seem to become less important to them. They become distracted with the media. Distracted with what the media says is ugly. Even the people that are models are not good enough. The models that are put on billboards are photo-shopped to" look better." Nobody is "beautiful" enough for the media's standards. Beauty has become something that is created by a person, not something that people are born with. I think that this needs to change. Some people go on diets that harm them physically as well as mentally. This has a snowball effect. With each person that gets some sort of plastic surgery more people will have it performed. It this society this has become something that is regular. In the past it would have boon something that was frowned upon unless the person had a valid reason, such as something that had happened to them. This surgery means that this person is not satisfied with the way that they look.  Why is this done for something such as beauty while nothing is done to improve things such as intelligence. I think that the obsession with beauty is obscene.

I choose to write this article because I think that it shows that people are getting distracted with things that are not important. I am also panning the text. I think that it is a bad things that people of all ages are sometimes scared to face the day because they are afraid of what people will think of them. This connects with what is written in the novel because the uglies in the book think that they are ugly just because they are told they are ugly. I relates because they are both related to the low self-esteem that is created.

This does effect my view on the novel because there were some things that I did not think about as deeply as I could have. While writing this it made me think about what the point of this book was very deeply. It made me think about how the author is trying to express how he feels about what is happening in this world.

Part 2

The dystopian in the novel "Uglies" is clearly in the title. The problem in this book is stated in the title and it is that people think that they are ugly just because that is what they are told, and because they are not "regular". This is decided by the government in the book, these people are also known as special circumstances. And when Tally goes to become pretty the government has found out that she is friends with someone that is a part of the smoke. The smoke is a group of people who have run away from the regular society that everybody else is a part of, people who have avoided becoming pretty. She is then not allowed to become pretty until she finds her friend Shay who has run to the smoke. It is shown here that the government is obsessed with controlling who is pretty and who isn't. The reason for this that is found out in the book is that when the surgery is performed there is something that is done to the brain. They insert a lesion that changes the way that they think. It seems to make them happy all the time. But this happiness comes with a side effect, their become less intelligent. But the government mainly gains control over all people in the society. The only people who do not have the brain lesions are the people who have either important or government jobs. It has been made clear that the government wants control over everything.
I think that the author is trying to make a point with what the media is doing today. I have noticed that what is pretty is decided by the media just as who is pretty is decided by the government in the book. This is why the world (in the book) is far from being prefect. Even though there are many people who are unaware of the brain lesions in may seem perfect. One of the main reasons that I continued to read this book was because it led me to wonder if it was possible for a government in the current world to do this. This book showed me that if the government was to do this today most of the people would know nothing about it and would have been just as all of the pretties were in the book, they would have been clueless and the government could dispose of the people who found out what was going on. This is what happens in the book. When Tally is forced to goes to the smoke the special circumstances have forced her to find the place. The government wants to dispose of all of the people who have avoided becoming pretty. The government wants everything to go the way that it has been planned. And the smoke is the one place where people can avoid the surgery. What the media calls "pretty" in modern day society is unjust almost all models are skinny, and almost all models are underweight, this is just as unhealthy as being over weight. Being pretty is a bit different in the book. Pretty is being completely average, so essentially the surgery is making people think alike and look alike. That is what I think about social justice in the book, the media decides who and what is pretty, just as it is in the current world. One of the injustices that I previously stressed was that the government is in control over the people in the book. The citizens in new pretty town are under the control of the special circumstances. Another unjust circumstance that is described is that it is possible for someone to not fit in just because they are ugly. People are being discriminated against because of the way that they look. This is one of the reasons that people get things such as plastic surgery, because they are tired of being judged by the way that they look. The is unjust because people cannot control the way that they look. All they can control is their action. And even though some people may think less highly of Tally because she is "ugly" she may still be respected because of her bravery. Another example of this would be after Shay gets the surgery Croy Will agree to anything that she says. I think that the author does a very good job of showing the dystopian. It took my only a couple of chapters to figure out the message that  the author was trying to get across.

After reading the novel I think that the injustices that the author was trying to get across was that people will almost always believe things that are told to them by a higher rank. I think this because almost all of the people who are yet to undergo the surgery to become pretty think that they are ugly. And the only reason that they think this is because they have been told this. And they think that the people that have undergone the surgery are pretty. I think that the author is trying to open the eyes of the reader to how the media has influenced the way that we think of beauty.

I think that the message is brought across clearly but the reader must be a of a certain age for them to understand that the author is talking about something other that a world that is based in the future. But they way that the message about the media is not hard to find as it was brought up throughout the entire book.

Uglies Book Review

Title: Uglies
Author: Scott Westerfeld
4.5 of 5 Stars
I found this book to be very interesting. Although it is set in the future, the book still deals with something that is happening today - what humans, as well as society, call "pretty". In the book when a person goes through a surgery they go from being "ugly" to "pretty". In the modern society we have an idea that is set in our head, and that is what we call pretty. In Uglies when the people transform from being "Ugly" to being "Pretty" they find out that looks are not the only thing that changes. The government is given control of these people. Many people may not realize that the media decides what and who is pretty. And this is what the book is about. When Tally, the main character, is forced to go to the smoke, a place that is all uglies, she meets a person named Avid and he has never seen a "pretty", and because of this he doesn't judge the uglies to be ugly he thinks that they are pretty. This shows that what "pretty" is has been decided by the government. And when someone is not exposed to what the government has created they see what they think is real beauty, not what the government wants them to think. The end of the book is very open leaving the reader wondering what is going to happen next. If the reader doesn't want to read the following book in the series (Pretties) then the ending might be unsatisfying. Overall I found this book a good read. The vocabulary is at a lower level. This book may open the eyes of many people to what this modern day society has become. Beauty should not be able to be fixed with surgery whether it is with plastic surgery in this world or if it is the pretty surgery that is performed in the book. I do not think that children under the age of 10 will fully understand this book. When finished reading this extraordinary adventure I found myself wanting to read the next book in the series. The author led me to love and hate some of the characters in the book, and it kept me always wondering what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in social justices.

About the New Book Cover. I choose this as my book cover because this is a regular person. And in the world of the uglies an ugly is a regular person. In no way are they ugly, it is just a regular preson that is in the age range of 12 and 16. It has nothing to do with their beauty it is only related to their age.
