quotation 3

A strange thought crossed her mind, and Tally said, “I’d hate it if you got the operation.”
She couldn’t believe she was saying it. “Even if they didn’t do your brain, I mean.”

This is something that is spoken to David just after Tally has learned what really happens when an ugly gets the operation. I think that this is one of the first points in the book where Tally realizes that it is possible to be pretty even without getting the surgery. This is one of the most important parts of the book in my mind because it shows that the media or special circumstances in the case of the book is in control of beauty, and the people in this book are so obsessed with beauty that they will do anything for it. If I were only looking for social injustices them this would be the point it would be easiest to see.

Text to Text. An article that I read while I was in Mr. Rakuc's class was all about how people in the beauty business are always trying to make people feel bad about the way they look. In a commercial they will take an average person and indirectly say that she looks bad even if she is just normal. They are trying to say that the way that we look now is ugly and if we use their product then we will be beautiful. It is just like in the book but I think that the book makes it more obvious than it is in real life but it is not exaggerated very much in comparison to modern-day society.

Text to World. I think that this obsession with beauty or more importantly beauty products is unjust. Companies are using their commercials to make people think that they need beauty products to look good. This is not true, this is not the real person if they are wearing make up of have had plastic surgery (Of course there are some reasonable exceptions to have plastic surgery such as recovering from a major medical operation) because they think that they may not look like everybody else. This is just like what Tally is realizing at this point in the book. She is realizing that people do not need to get surgery to become beautiful.

Text to Self. There are people everywhere who get surgery. Almost all of these people would not get surgery if it were not for the media. They think that they need the surgery to be regular. It is unusual when one thinks of what these people are really doing, they are trying to trick people into thinking they look "regular." This is just like how the special circumstances into thinking that being a  "pretty" is regular.
