Glossary

Bubbly: Adj. This is a term used in the book that represents something that is cool. They like anything that is pretty, or anything that is fun or simply a good feeling. They like anything that is "bubbly."“There’s even a rumor that all the bubbly jobs go to people who had tricky records as kids. But that’s years from now. The main thing is to get you pretty already.”


Hoverboard: This is a board that uses the metal that is in the ground. In the cities there is metal grids all throughout the ground making possible to hoverboard anywhere. However when out in places such as the rusties there certain places that the hoverboard can hover on. In the Smoke they are trying to build their own grid from the

Pretty: The word pretty has a very different definition in the book. It is any person that has gone threw a surgery that can be performed when they turn 16. Without this surgery it is impossible to be pretty. And in the book being pretty means more than having good looks. It also has to do with what has been done to the  brain. “I don’t want to be pretty.” This is refering to the fact that someone is not born with beauty but it is given to them in the form of surgery.

Ugly: This is any normal person that is within the ages of 12 and 16. This persson in no way is ugly. They are only ugly in the eyes in their own society. It is the media that his decided what is ugly. Uglies are jsut regular people.

Special: A special is a person who is capable of extreme feats of strength. They aren't only capable of feats of strength but they are also extremely intelligent. They are like supermen.  They are like police except they do not need weapons, because all of their senses are hightened to an extreme degree "Apparently, Specials are like gremlins; you blame them when anything weird happens. Some people think they’re totally bogus, and no one I know has actually seen a Special.” This quote is saying that these "specials" are so powerful that they are rarely used in Uglyville.
